GOP Debate #9 (Dearborn, Michigan, October 9th, 2007)

The online CNBC.com poll was taken down after several hours when the total number of votes were over 7,500. Why would they take it down rather than continue to show who won? Perhaps it is because ...

Ron Paul received over 70% of the votes!

For the question, "Who won the debate?":

Paul 74%
Huckabee 7.2%
Romney 5.8%

Thompson 5.5%
Giuliani 3.6%
McCain 1.9%

Brownback <1%
Hunter <1%
Tancredo <1%

Debate highlight: Romney claims he needs attorneys to read the Constitution for him! Hunter, Huckabee, McCain, Thompson and Giuliani admit they'll simply ignore it!

Ron Paul recommends "just open up the Constitution and read it"!

Each candidates was asked if they, as President, would need to go to Congress to get authorization to take military action against Iran's nuclear facilities.

Hunter, Huckabee, McCain, Thompson and Giuliani replied they would not obtain US Congress authorization if there was some imminent threat from Iran. (ie. ignore the constitution)

Romney replied "You sit down with your attorneys and (they) tell you what you have to do (finding a scapegoat to read the Constitution for him), but obviously the President of the United States has to do what's in the best interest of the United States to protect us against a potential threat." (i.e. ignore the Constitution if the attorneys don't tell him what he wants to hear!)

Ron Paul, in his reply, strongly advocated for obtaining US Congress authorization, which is mandatory in the US Constitution.

Mr. Paul addressed Romney's answer by stating "Absolutely. This idea of going and talking to attorneys totally baffles me. Why don't we just open up the Constitution and read it? You're not allowed to go to war without a declaration of war."

Romney, Hunter, Huckabee, McCain, Thompson
and Giuliani admitted that they would

violate their oath of office to
"preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."
