GOP Debate #7 (Fort Lauderdale, Florida, September 17th, 2007)
Mike Huckabee soars to first place,
Ron Paul a distant second!
All other 'front runners' fare miserably.
Post debate poll numbers:
Huckabee 63%
Paul 13%
Keyes 7%
Brownback 5%
Hunter 4%
Thompson 4%
Tancredo 2%
Giuliani 1%
McCain 1%
Cox 1%
Romney 0%

This one may have been somewhat predictable. The audience tended to be strong Christian Conservatives who, in general, subscribe to the pro-marriage amendment, pro-life, and pro-unconstitutional war mentality.
With this being the criteria, Giuliani's 'values' fare terribly, McCain's don't do well, and Romney's are suspect. Add to this Romney's 'Mormonism', and nobody voted for him!
(Editors of www.knowyourrino.com disagree with holding someone's brand of Christianity against them. Article VI, Clause III of the Constitution states "no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States." However, their lack of faith or weak adhearance to the religious beliefs they claim to profess certainly should be considered!)
Although Ron Paul is pro-life and pro-traditional family, he points out the Constitution doesn't give the Federal Government any authority to regulate in these areas. He also doesn't support abandoning the Constitutional requirements for going to war, in order to fight radical Islam.
This view doesn't fare well among the 'Values Voters' crowd, unless they also understand and support the Constitutional limits to Federal power.
Apparently, around 13% of the 'Values Voters' group believe that following the Constitution is more important than other political agendas.

Mike Huckabee is a sincere eloquent spokesman for the mainstream Christian conservative. There are two primary issues however that must be dealt with;
First , as conservatives what values are we trying to conserve? The status quo values of big government of the current Republican Party? Or, the Constitutional and moral values of our founding fathers of extremely limited government intervention and personal, church, and local community responsibility?
Second, is the ability to motivate the conservative base AND the independent/swing voters. Only Dr. Ron Paul successfully answers both. No one in politics today has a better Constitutional record or expertise. He has the best record on limiting taxes, eliminating gun control, and promoting free enterprise. And for the ultimate value issue of abortion, what could be better then a Pro-life medical doctor that has delivered over 4,000 babies? Once value voters understand that we need to get the government out of the way for morality to flourish – Ron Paul will be their clear choice. At the same time Ron Paul clearly appeals to independent crowd with his message of limited government, peace, and liberty.
Freedom and liberty bring people together, and no one has a clearer message than Ron Paul.

Ron Paul’s solid second place finish in the voting has to be scored a major win. Hundreds of cheering Ron Paul supporters were overjoyed at Dr. Paul’s effort as they gathered after the debate with the only peace candidate in this election. Dr. Paul’s second place finish shows that he is an acceptable alternative to the Values Voters who picked Huckabee as what amounted to their first pick for pastor. That’s a big win for Dr. Paul, since this election is not for pastor, but for President. And while a pro-war person might be able to get elected as pastor of a church, a pro-war person will not be able to get elected as a Republican President of the United States when 70% of the American people already are fed up with Bush’s Neocon war. That percentage will only climb as the needless deaths in Iraq climb. Anywhere from a quarter of a million to a million Iraqis have been killed by this war…a war that has WORSENED everything. And four thousand Americans are dead. By the way, one of the things made horribly worse by this war is that a large and secure Christian population in Iraq that went back to a time way before European Christianity has been utterly destroyed as a direct consequence of the war. Huckabee can’t run against the pro-war Hillary as a peace candidate. Only Dr. Paul can. That’s why only Ron Paul can beat Hillary (or Obama or any of the other pro-war Democrats) in 2008.
